Field Tests

In the ideal future, every vehicle runs on 100% clean, renewable energy. To get there, three critical steps must first be taken:

• Research and develop fuels that come from a range of sources
• Test the options in real-world conditions
• Use the best alternative fuels and vehicles as they come on the market

By working together, AC Transit and Chevron are field-testing alternatives today so that everyone can benefit from cleaner fuels tomorrow.

Biodiesel and GTL Diesel

AC Transit is conducting extensive field tests of two new alternative fuels:

• Biodiesel made from vegetable oils, and
• GTL (Gas-to-Liquids) diesel made from natural gas

The Cleaner Fuels Test Program is examining these two diesel alternatives in terms of emissions, fuel efficiency, and engine wear. Learn more about this study.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are quiet, zero-emission, electrically propelled vehicles that only emit water vapor from the tailpipe. Since the beginning of 2006, Chevron has been providing hydrogen for AC Transit‘s HyRoad program, one of the most comprehensive hydrogen fuel cell demonstration programs in the world.
